When to See a Doctor for Your Acne
Acne can happen to people of all ages, not just teenagers, but both teenagers and adults. It does not matter what race you are or what gender - acne can happen to anyone. Depending on the severity of the breakout, it can cause physical scarring and psychological effects to the people who suffer from it. To those who have never faced a more than the occasional pimple, it may not seem like a big deal, but to those who deal with acne on a daily basis, it can seem like quite the crisis.
No matter how bad your individual case of acne is, you may want to consider having it checked out by your doctor or dermatologist. Left untreated, acne can lead to visible and unsightly scarring. It also can leave emotional scarring, as any teenager that has been labeled a "pizza face" can tell you. Your doctor or dermatologist can help you figure out the best course of treatment for your individual case of acne.
If you are undecided about whether or not to see your doctor about your acne, there are some definite times when you should think about it. If your acne condition has progressed to the point where you are embarrassed by it, or has left scarring on your face that makes you anxious about the way that you look, you may want to get it checked out. If you feel that your self-esteem has lowered, or you are suffering from depression or other emotional stress from your acne, then it may be time to talk to your doctor. If you have already tried several different over the counter remedies for acne and none have worked, then you may need a stronger, prescription medication for your acne. If your acne pimples are causing scarring to your face or body it is time to get them looked at. And, if your acne is painful when touched or washed, or you have repeated breakouts in the same area leading to inflammation or infection, it is time to see your doctor.
Depending on the progression of your acne and scarring, not all visible effects may be able to be treated, so the best thing to do is to get your acne looked at as soon as possible. Your doctor will be able to advise you of the best way to erase or reduce scarring, treat current breakouts, and prevent future breakouts and scarring from occurring.
You should be able to call your insurance carrier to make sure that you are covered to visit a dermatologist, or find out what you need to do to get a referral. Once you have confirmed eligibility, you should make an appointment with a dermatologist to see what can be done. He or she can give you medications, cleaners, or tips to help reduce and eliminate your acne breakouts and scarring.
Even if your acne is not severe, if it is interfering with your day to day activities it is in your best interest to get it looked at. Acne is extremely treatable, so there is no reason to suffer from the emotional and physical effects.
