Erectile Dysfunction and Its Affects on our Partners
Erectile dysfunction affects the lives of many middle aged men and their partners to one degree or another. Erectile dysfunction is defined as an inability to obtain an adequate erection for satisfactory sexual activity. Erectile dysfunction, also called impotence, is more common in men over the age of 65. It is normal for most men to have the occasional episode of erectile dysfunction. If erectile dysfunction proves to be a pattern or a persistent problem it may interfere with a man's self esteem as well as affecting the sex life of he and his partner. Erectile dysfunction may also e a sign of a physical or emotional problem that requires treatment. While erectile dysfunction was once a taboo subject, doctors are fast gaining a better understanding of what causes erectile dysfunction.
Whether the cause of erectile dysfunction is from physical factors or psychological factors, or both, it can become a source of mental and emotional stress for both the man and his partner. If a man experiences occasional or persistent erectile dysfunction, it is important to remember your sexual partner. A man's partner may see the inability to have an erection as a sign of decreased sexual desire. It is important to communicate openly and honestly about the condition. It is also strongly advised to seek counseling in order to help confront any concerns they may have about erectile dysfunction and learn how better to discuss their feelings with one another. Communication is key throughout any diagnoses and treatment process.
Anxiety has both emotional and physical consequences that can affect erectile function. Excessive concern about sexual performance is often referred to as performance anxiety and may provoke an intense fear of failure and low self esteem. This may, however, set off a cycle of chronic impotence. In response to the anxiety caused by impotence, the brain releases chemicals known as neurotransmitters that constrict the smooth muscles of the penis and its arteries. This constriction reduces the blood flow into and increases the blood flow out of the penis. Stress, no matter how little it may be, helps to promote the release of brain chemicals that disrupt potency in a similar way.
Partners of men with erectile dysfunction may feel rejected and resentful, especially if the affected man does not confide in his own anxieties or depression. Both partners tend to experience guilt for what they perceive as a personal failure. Tension and anger frequently arise between people who are unable or unwilling to discuss sexual or emotional issues with each other. It can be extremely difficult for the man to perform when both partners harbor negative feelings. In addition to seeking counseling, whether individual or as a couple, a doctor should be contacted to perform a careful physical exam, including an examination of the genital area and a digital rectal examination. A number of treatments are available to treat erectile dysfunction and both the man and his partner should be able to find one that works for them.
