Treating Food Allergic Reactions in a Crisis
Have you ever seen someone go into anaphylactic shock? It can be quite scary! If you have a food allergy that is quite severe, you have the potential to develop the same problem, no matter how diligent you are. For instance, people with severe peanut allergies have been known to develop anaphylaxis within a minute or two of even the most indirect exposures like just smelling peanuts! They can be diligent in every way, reading food labels and not even touching a peanut butter jar but one whiff of this beloved sandwich spread has the power of taking them down.
When you or someone you know experiences anaphylaxis, you have to act quickly to avoid future complications such as unconsciousness or even death. It is no time to be indecisive therefore it is important to be trained on what to do BEFORE the signs of anaphylactic shock occur. And when in doubt about what to do, dialing 911 for an ambulance is the best course of action.
In order to act decisively in the face of anaphylactic shock, you should first be able to recognize the signs of this severe allergic reaction. Shellfish and peanut allergy sufferers are most susceptible, although anyone with a food allergy has the potential to develop anaphylaxis. The following things could happen so be aware and prepared for them:
* Hives or rash
* Light-headedness or confusion caused by a sudden drop in blood pressure
* Fast spreading swelling on the body
* Wheezing or breathing difficulty caused by tongue and respiratory passageways swelling
* Sharp or severe pain in the abdominal area that could cause diarrhea or nausea
Once you realize that anaphylactic shock is the problem, call 911 for an ambulance right away. Even if you were able to alleviate some of the symptoms, there is a chance of a relapse so you want to be near medical personnel when it happens. If possible, drive the person in crisis to the hospital yourself if it will be quicker and either you or someone else should call ahead to the emergency room so they can be prepared as anaphylactic shock may require special support and attention.
People with severe food allergies should always carry epinephrine in the form of an EpiPen or some other easily injectible form. If the person affected cannot talk, you should check their purse, pockets or other personal areas for the EpiPen and administer it right away.
Sometimes, anaphylactic shock can progress to cardiac arrest, especially if the passageways swell making it difficulty to breath, triggering a heart episode. CPR may need to be administered to help the affected person breath until medical personnel can arrive. If a close friend or family member has food allergies, the best thing you can do is take first aid and CPR classes so you can be prepared for the worst.
Watching someone go into anaphylactic shock is scary and it could temporarily paralyze you. Somehow, you have to dig deep within yourself and find the strength to help them. It could be a matter of life and death.
