Guidelines for Families Struggling with OCD

If you or someone in your household suffers from OCD, it is important that you do what you can to work together as a family. No one case of OCD is alike, however they all can have the same devastating outcome if it is not kept in check. Here are some things that your family can do to help cope with the problem and better yet, lessen the problem altogether.

1. Stay calm and keep your cool when things get out of control. Getting in frenzy will do nothing but make symptoms worse. Take a time out and think before you act. Remember, eyes will be on you in how you handle things when things get stressful. Lead by example.

2. It is always wise to lower your expectations and get results than to expect too much and be let down. You must also make sure that you do not compare someone with OCD to others; it is not practical or feasible. Compare how they are doing week to week or month to month versus year to year.

3. Try to overlook the persistent rituals and checking behavior. Realize that the person with these behaviors will be a lot harder to handle if they are forced to stop their behavior. As annoying as it may be, it helps them cope. You don't have to actively participate in it.

4. Something else very important is not to judge their behavior. Accept it for what it is and move on. You may see their behavior as irrational and bizarre, but they don't' and no bit of arguing is going to make them see it your way.

5. Organize family activities such as walking, bike riding or any other physical activity. Activity is exactly what a patient with OCD needs, it will help calm them and bring peace.

6. Allow verbal expression of rage and anger and listen to what they say. Try not to judge or to be defensive. Then after thinking it through you can come up with a game plan on solving the problem.

7. Always explain changes in the household. Most OCD patients absolutely despise change so if you don't explain why and how you are going to do something you are libel to end up with a mess on your hands. Do not ask for any changes that even you have a hard time with, it won't be successful.

8. Ignore what you can't change, in other words let some things that you would otherwise panic or get upset about go without as much as a word. It is a learned behavior, but it will bring peace to the house. The only exception to the rule is violent or suicidal threats.

9. Make what you say positive. Even if you are trying to get across something negative, say it in a positive way.

15. Take time out for yourself. It is important to carry on business as usual. Make time to enjoy time with your friends, start or maintain a hobby.
