Hypnosis for OCD?
OCD is a disorder that deals with obsessive thoughts and compulsive actions, to the point of impairment of every day life. It can be a moderate nuisance or a debilitating disorder. There are many treatment options for OCD, however one in particular, hypnosis is getting great reviews and may prove to be the best yet.
Just what can hypnosis do for an OCD patient? The truth is, it can help a great deal and is on its way to being considered a legitimate healing modality in western medicine. Recent and significant breakthroughs in OCD treatment have been centered on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. C.B.T. is a form of talk therapy that if done correctly, can be blended very nicely with hypnosis for added benefits. Furthermore, being that OCD is recognized as an anxiety disorder, it makes perfect sense that the medically proven effects of hypnosis on anxiety can be applied to OCD behaviors, but the debate still exists.
Many OCD experts believe that sexual abuse, bad parenting, childhood neglect, abuse, early family member loss and other traumas have nothing to do with OCD. However, many psychologists disagree with this theory and for good reason. OCD is an anxiety disorder and many times anxiety disorders are linked to past experiences. To say that OCD has nothing to do with past experiences is narrow minded to say the least. Many experts are convinced that OCD can be overcome by simply talking. And, if this is the case, doesn't it stand to reason that this is because of abnormal childhood cognitive behavioral processes such as discussed above? If it is not a physical brain chemistry problem, than it also stands to reason that it is a disorder caused by circumstances.
Another very interesting fact to note is that it is well known that stress can either exacerbate or trigger the onset of OCD symptoms. If this is the case, how can anyone say that OCD is not related to experiences or the cognitive process? Like any other anxiety based disorder, it is well linked to experiences and fears, not necessarily a brain chemistry problem, although that is sometimes the case.
So, once you are convinced that hypnosis is a treatment worth exploring, where do you go for help? The answer is that there are many self help programs on the market, as well as clinics that specialize in the treatment for such disorders. Which you choose is up to you. However, keep in mind that you do get what you pay for. Although some of the self help programs may help, finding the right one can be a trial and error that may end up costing you more than just going to a clinic in the first place. It is very important to do your research. Talk to others with OCD and share success stories. You can learn a lot from other people's experiences. And although not everything that works for someone else will work for you, the trial and error process may prove to be much shorter and costlier.
