OCD and Dieting
Dieting can turn into an obsession easier than you may think. You may be surprised to know this; however it may not be news to you if you suffer from eating disorders such as bulimia or anorexia because you live with this obsession everyday. Maintaining your figure has become one of the most important things in society, and sadly, people are suffering because of it. This article will take a look into the dieting phenomenon and how it can turn into an OCD type behavior if it not properly monitored.
If you have heard of the term fanatical dieting, you are not alone; we are bombarded with ads for various diet plans almost constantly. With so many diets to choose from today, how can it be seen as anything other than fanatical! The truth of the matter is that a diet is nothing more than a program set out to control what, where, when or how much you eat. More importantly, they are created with profits in mind, not people. Think about it, almost every diet has guides, menus and what not to eat lists. What isn't fanatical about it?
If you jump on that bandwagon and find yourself trying to stick to a specific diet plan, it is important to note that many of them are set up for failure in the long term. Most diets will do nothing more than frustrate you and give you the illusion of losing weight. This illusion, in my opinion, is what makes people become obsessed.
If you analyze someone with bulimia or anorexia you will see that because they take in very few calories they lose weight. Unfortunately, the way that they lose weight is not healthy. Well, because they are losing weight, their mind is almost tricked into believing if they eat anything that they will gain weight and become fat. The sad thing about obsessions such as this is that it is true to a certain extent. Yes, it is true that you will gain weight if you eat, but in their case it is necessary weight, and they do not see it that way.
Another facet of the dieting phenomenon is emotional eating. This too can turn into obsessive compulsive behavior if you do not pay attention. In fact, emotional eating has been proven to be the second biggest reason for overeating. Next time you want a snack; ask yourself if you are really hungry or if you just want to change how you feel. It is important because people actually become obsessed with the thought of food when they are bored, lonely, miserable or tired. None of these reasons have to do with physical hunger and cause nothing but undesired weight gain. Your body will never feel satisfied and neither will your emotions. Next time you are feeling down, pay attention to your behavior, you just may be surprised. If you get these thoughts that just won't go away, acknowledge them and then focus on something constructive like exercise.
