Many people with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) think that they are alone and are ashamed of the compulsions they must perform. The obsession is the part of the OCD that affects the mental health of the individual, and the compulsorily part affects the life and well being of the sufferer. An example would be that ones hands have been soiled by touching a dirty kitchen counter top, then having to wash their hands repeatedly until the thought of the germs subsides. The water may be to the point of scalding and a new bar of anti-bacterial soap may be used in every washing, which may be many times in one setting.
The reason for this article is to make the reader comprehend they are not alone in this ailment/disease. OCD is a disorder of the brain and is listed in mental health as a disease. For this disease however, there is no known cure. The symptoms can be alleviated through treatment and medication. One of the most important things to remember is to get help. When talking to the mental health professional, it will help you recognize the obsession and understand it for what it is. When one doesn't understand why they must perform their compulsions, then the mental health professional can help one recognize the whys and how to avert them.
If you are obsessing over trivial matters, and compelled to do something until the obsession subsides, you do not know enjoy the anxiety you experience and do not wish to do the ritual every time the particular obsession is brought on. It is difficult for an OCD sufferer to seek out treatment because part of the disorder may be the fear of medications affecting the brain. It is important to understand that the brain is the one thing that is affected and it needs to be alleviated of the disorder that is apparent. One must also understand that if OCD goes untreated, it may claim their life from illnesses created from the body being run down from the anxiety. If one doesn't understand their own ailment, help is needed to do so. Understanding the disease however, is just the beginning. There are several treatments available to the OCD sufferer that requires help from a mental health professional. Do not try to live this way, do not try to stop the rituals, and definitely don't just try to ignore it. Living with OCD is a must, but accepting it is another story.
When an OCD sufferer stops a compulsion, it may work once or even twice. But the next time the obsession occurs, the compulsion may be so great that one has to perform it repeatedly to make up for the times that it was missed and just be continued on the extended pattern for ignoring the compulsion and having to make up for every time the obsession appears. To ignore the OCD may affect ones relationships and friendships to the point where the only result would be being alone.
Don't keep this ailment secret! Discuss it with a health care professional to rule out any other options and then be referred to a mental health professional and begin the road to a place that an OCD sufferer yearns for the most, peace of mind.
