Side Effects of Ovarian Cancer Treatments Relying On Chemotherapy
Treating ovarian cancer with chemotherapy is frequently called for after surgery to ensure that no stray cancerous cells are left which may once again cause the unfettered growths that are so dangerous in the human body. At times, it is the chemotherapy which successfully leads to the remission of tumors even when surgery is not as successful. Unfortunately, the side effects of ovarian cancer treatments relying on chemotherapy are numerous and are actually scaring some patients to such an extent that they may hesitate to undergo the life saving treatment.
Knowing what to expect when undergoing chemotherapy will go a long ways to help you not only anticipate the side effects, but also set yourself up successfully to counteract them.
* The visible signs of an ovarian cancer patient undergoing chemotherapy are hair loss and anemia. Women will notice that there is falling out in clumps and before long their faces look wan, and there are dark circles under their eyes. Counteract the anemia with an iron supplement as indicated by your physician.
* Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, malnutrition are all results of the inability to keep food down. Although by and large unavoidable, it helps if you can anticipate these feelings and have foods on hand that are easily digestible for you. This will vary from case to case and you may need to experiment a bit to find what will fill you up and stay down. Once you find this kind of food, be sure to find a high quality multi vitamin to take and thus counteract the nutritional deficiencies you may be experiencing.
* General pain, malaise, and feelings of just plain being unwell go hand in hand with chemotherapy treatments. Although doctors may be able to give you something for the pain, the odds are good that it will do little to lift your spirits. Engage the help of friends and family members to help with daily chores and to take care of the little odds and ends that are important to you. Coming home to a clean kitchen with a vase of flowers on the table may not seem like much, but it can go a long ways to helping you deal better with the depression than coming home to a clean kitchen where the dishes are still sitting in the dish rack and there is nothing cheery to see. Your best friend or closets acquaintance should know the little things that make you tick and if you let her know how much you appreciate such little touches, you will be certain to set yourself up for an easier way of getting through the treatment.
* The most dangerous side effect is the attack onto the immune system which the drugs carry out and in some cases it is not the ovarian cancer that kills a patient but an infection the body was not able to fight off. It is crucial to stay away from anyone who might be sick with a communicable disease or even someone who might just be a carrier!
