Surviving Ovarian Cancer without Harming the Body through Supplementation

Dietary supplements are considered to be of vital importance to those wishing to live a healthy life, but even more so for those who are undergoing treatment for ovarian cancer or any other disease that requires invasive treatment. Many of the treatments you will receive during the fight against the ovarian cancer most likely will strain your bodily systems to such as extent as to make supplementation vital for normal functioning of your body.

Yet in order to be surviving ovarian cancer without harming the body through supplementation, there are some facts you cannot do without:

* Do not self medicate. It is tempting to order the supplements you stumble across as you are surfing the Internet in an attempt to educate yourself further about your cancer. Yet ordering any supplement and taking it without your doctor's express approval is unwise and may actually adversely affect your health. Give your doctor a chance to read through the list of ingredients and then compare them to your symptoms the current course of your treatment to make sure there is no hidden danger to you.

* Beware the mega doses which are so frequently hyped. Although it is a common human way of thinking that believes a little bit of something good is great, but a lot of something good is even better; unfortunately, the exact opposite may be the result. Overdosing on supplements is just as bad for the human body as overdosing on prescription medication. While it is understood that prescription drugs need to be taken and given out with care, it is usually discounted when it comes to vitamins and other dietary supplements. Remember that vitamins in high doses will adversely affect your overall bodily chemistry and may lead to serious problems in the short as well as the long run.

* Stay away from folklore treatments. Just because your grandma swore by a certain tea or herb does not make it a safe supplement now that you are undergoing treatment for ovarian cancer. As a matter of fact, you may even find that some herbs will counteract the effects of the chemotherapy drugs and instead of actually helping you to get well you are actively inhibiting the full effectiveness of the drugs. In the same vein, do not give too much credence to miraculous supplements which are sold online as being authenticated as ancient Chinese remedies for a variety of cancerous growths and associated treatments.

* If you do - with your doctor's approval - supplement, make sure you know where the herbs were grown and how they were processed. Although it is tempting to believe that an herb is a plant and therefore healthy and safe, the reality shows that many times herbs are grown next to busy thoroughfares where they absorb harmful chemicals from passing traffic. Do not allow yourself to be fooled by the pretty picture of the rolling meadow on the bottle! Similarly, make sure the supplement is organically processed; this ensures that you will not be subjected to potentially dangerous preservatives and other additives for which you did not bargain.
