Is There a Medication to Treat PE?
Premature ejaculation is the kind of conditions which rarely inspires a man to seek the help and guidance of a licensed physician. Relying instead heavily on the input of other men or the claims of herbal supplement peddlers on the Internet, in some cases it may be years before a sufferer will actually muster the courage to seek out professional help.
Obviously this is not a wise choice, especially when considering that PE is sometimes secondary to a more serious primary condition which - if treated - will resolve any instances of premature ejaculation as well. In the same vein, when a complete physical examination is conducted, a medical practitioner has the opportunity of narrowing down the reasons for the sexual dysfunction, and since there is more than one medication to treat PE itself or as a symptom, the odds of relief are great!
For example, Dapoxetine - at this time under consideration for approval by the Food and Drug Administration - was originally developed as an antidepressant but soon its other properties became known when clinical studies were conducted. Although promising for the treatment of PE, there are potential side effects, such as nausea, weight gain, and skin outbreaks which have been associated with the long term use of the drug.
Diphenhydramine, also known as Benadryl, and found in various antihistamine containing drugs, such as sleep aids, acts directly on various muscle groups, including the pubococcygeus muscle which is of course connected to the contractions that occur during orgasm. The downside is the fact that the drug will make the user tired, thus in effect lessening arousal if the dosage is too high; of course, once the right dosage is discovered, this is a potentially perfect tool for ensuring that ejaculation occurs less rapidly and instead prolongs the sexual intercourse.
Hyperforin, found in St. John's Wort, is also indicated as slowing down ejaculation and thus actively combating incidents of premature ejaculation. Thus far, this substance has shown to have the most promise of all the drugs on the market today.
Some physicians and their patients have begun experimenting with local anesthetics that are applied to the tip of the penis in an effort to reduce sensory overload and thus prolong arousal as well as sexual intercourse while effectively delaying ejaculation until full sensory ability has been reestablished. Even as this may be a potentially viable option, keep in mind that during sexual intercourse the substance applied to the penis will enter the vagina, in essence reducing the sensory input the partner will enjoy and thus while intercourse may be prolonged, attaining orgasm for the female has been greatly hampered.
Yet even though most all of the available medical treatment options have distinct drawbacks, it is noteworthy that in spite of these drawbacks sometimes a combination of treatment options or a dosage reduction are all that is needed to make the solution work for an individual. Therefore it is indeed highly advisable to discuss premature ejaculation concerns - or any other sexual dysfunction experienced - with a medical professional.
