5 Things You Must Know About Respite Care
1. Respite care gives the carer a break - carers of patients work extremely hard, for long hours, and often for relatively low pay. As a result, it is important that they get appropriate time off from work. When a carer takes a break to recharge their batteries, a respite care service will ensure that an appropriate stand in carer is in place to take over the responsibilities on a temporary basis. This is especially important for carers who are unpaid, because they are caring for a loved one and not doing it as a source of income.
2. Carers can meet people - respite care gives carers the chance to meet like minded people who are also caring for loved ones or who are in this line of work as a profession. This can be very comforting for carers who can now share their stories and worries with other people in the same boat. By meeting such people, the carer is often also provided with special tips that they can take away to make their life as a carer easier. In addition to emotional support, the carer can take part in fun social activities that are not related to care. This gives them a chance to let their hair down and to get a bit of time to enjoy themselves.
3. Patients can meet people - the social aspects of respite care do not only benefit the carer, they can benefit the patient as well. When the primary carer is taking a break, the patient will often be placed in group care with another of other patients. This puts the individual in an environment where they are surrounded by similar people, with similar problems in life. Again, this can provide emotional support as well as a fun social experience where new skills can be learnt and games played.
4. Respite care can take place at home - when a carer needs to take time off, the patient does not need to be placed into a care home for group care - they can still receive care from home. This usually involves self-employed careers being hired on a temporary basis to attend the home of the patient to provide the care. These people may be employed during the day time, select hours of the day, only at night, or even on a permanent (day and night) basis.
5. Improves quality of care - respite care actually improves the caring ability of the person that is taking a break. By fully recharging their batteries, the carer will be more mentally and physically ready to take on future challenges that will be required of them. Also, the social aspects of meeting other carers will mean that valuable tips are obtained and essential new skills can be learned. The people that carers tend to meet whilst away from their full time caring job, are often very experienced and can offer great insights that will make the life of the carer easier. No-one can be expected to maintain a high level of care without any sufficient resting time so simply taking a time-out will result in better care in the future.
