Mosquitoes Wreck Havoc in the Disease World

There are countless species of mosquitoes all around the world and each and every one of them has the potential to carry bacteria, viruses and parasites that cause disease, in some instances, some of the deadliest diseases known to man. Millions of people worldwide die each year from diseases carried by the mosquito and millions more get sick and have to be hospitalized for treatment.

Mosquitoes also can transmit disease to animals as well. In fact, many diseases in animals like encephalitis and heartworm begin with a simple, itchy mosquito bite. In humans, mosquitoes transmit diseases caused by tiny parasitic worms, amoebas and protozoa and viruses. When you are planning to travel to foreign lands with a reputation for endemic diseases, it is wise to consult with the Center for Disease Control to see if there are any travel advisories to these places you want to go.

Malaria

Malaria is perhaps one of the most known diseases caused by a parasite transmitted by a certain species of female mosquitoes called Anopheles. Africa is one of the primary areas where this disease is prevalent, although it can occur in other tropical and sub-tropical locations. There are anti-malarial drugs available which can help you combat the disease before you even contract it. Several hundred million cases of malaria are reported each year and a few million of those do die from it although treatment has made recovery from it almost a sure thing.

Dengue Fever

Caused by the arbovirus, dengue fever strikes Africa, Central and South America and Asia primarily, although there have been a few hundred cases the past several years in parts of the United States. While the death toll is low with this particular disease, the pain and suffering can be quite high, depending on the presenting symptoms and whether you have a compromised immune system.

Yellow Fever

Yet another disease spread by the mosquito, yellow fever is often found in tropical areas of South America, Central America and Africa. People die from it every year although most get over it within a few weeks. There are vaccinations available for it that is required for travelers to certain countries where the disease may be prevalent.

West Nile

West Nile Virus is one of the more well-known mosquito based diseases in the world as it is truly a global threat. Anyone can get this illness which was once limited to just birds. However these infected birds provide blood meals to the mosquitoes which then turn around and bite other animals and people, spreading disease.

There are many other diseases which occur from a mosquito bite and sometimes a blood test is needed to determine what it is. Your best protection is staying home, choosing air conditioned quarters indoors or at least start investing in some heavy duty insect repellent along the way. Mosquito netting to protect your lounging and sleeping areas is wise. The netting can be treated in advance with a special insecticide as a second barrier of protection. In addition, steer clear of standing or stagnant water as they are perfect breeding grounds of mosquitoes.
