Anger Management and Teens: Discerning Between Normal Anger and Abnormal Anger
With teenagers these days, anger management can be a rather touchy or taboo subject, but it is an important topic that must be brought up at some point or another, especially if anger management is an issue you are noticing in your teenager.
It unimportant to realize that life as teenager is stressful, regardless of how adults live and work. The life of a teenager is not always a cake walk--it can get rather frustrating at times and times of anger are understandable. The problem with some teens is the way that they are managing their anger. If your child is constantly in trouble in school or often involved in altercations with other teens, consider the fact that they may have an issue with anger management.
Anger issues are normal for teenagers, but they are most certainly issues that must be faced head on, many times with professional help. There are normal types of anger and there are types of anger that are unusual, and may indicate problems with anger management.
It is normal for certain things to incite anger in the human brain, but anger is a fleeting emotion. If your teen is known to think a lot about revenge or dwell on things that people have done to affect them for a long time, they may have issues with anger management. Anger is a natural response to things that people do to offend us, or things in our environment that go wrong.
Also, if small inconveniences incite more anger than is usually normal in your teen, consider the fact that they may have issues with anger management. You should at first try to discuss with your teen that you feel they are having issues with anger management and see how they feel about it. You might be surprised by their reaction--anger management is not always something teens go into denial about like you might think.
It is possible to get help for anger management. There are classes going on at community centers across the nation every night, and anger issues are more common than a person might think. The idea of not dealing with anger management issues should be more upsetting than the idea of your teen having to face their anger issues. If not properly addressed, anger management problems can lead to even bigger problems, many of them involving the law. The law does not look kindly upon people who have anger management problems, and if a judge mandates that a person attend anger management classes, it must be done at their expense at the risk of their freedom if they do not fulfill that obligation.
Understand that anger management with teenagers is not about changing their mind about what should and should not incite anger in them. When it comes to anger management and teenagers, the focus is more on more constructive ways to channel angry thoughts and feelings than in violent, explosive ways that usually cause drama and trouble with other people, and sometimes the law.
