How to Find a Good Home Care Person
As people age, one of the main concerns of the family is finding good home care assistance. However, this is one time where you do not want to rush out and hire the first person who knocks on your door. Take some time to look into the applicant's history and decide if they are the right person to care for your loved one.
First, you may need to consider what home care is. Home care does not usually pertain to anything medical, aside from the fact that it might be a medical condition that requires the person to seek home care. Rather, it helps the person keep up with day to day activities so that they are not forced into a nursing home or hospice care. As you age, you may find it increasingly difficult to do things like clean the house, run errands, or even cook. Even tasks that were once simple, things like taking a bath and getting dressed may become difficult. A home care provider can assist with these needs, either on a set shift, but the hour, or living-in with the patient.
There are also several types of home care that you can choose from. A homemaker may do simple chores around the house like making meals, light cleaning, laundry, and doing the shopping. A personal care person will focus on just that - daily activities like bathing, dressing, eating, and grooming. A home care person can also be strictly for companionship, keeping the elderly person company while the rest of the family is gone throughout the day. Home health care service providers will provide nursing, psychiatric, or physical therapies at home. Or respite care, which is all-encompassing. This person will live in with the client and provide any help needed.
Next, there are several things to consider when it comes time to make the actual selection. First, you will want to consider the cost. An agency is likely to be more expensive than an individual person; however, an agency will also have caretakers that are professionally trained. An individual may or may not have had this training unless they provide you with proof.
An agency also tends to have a strict system with how they process patients. Payment will be professional processed, and a replacement will be provided if the caretaker is ill or can otherwise not fulfill their duties. If you have a problem, you can file a complaint with the agency.
However, some people still prefer to deal with an individual person instead of an agency. If that is the case, there are some things that you should watch out for.
First, make sure that you know the person that you are going to be working with. If you do not know them personally, make sure to conduct a thorough interview and background check. Make sure that you make your expectations clear from day one and even better if you get it written down in a contract so that there is no confusion. Discuss the amount of the salary immediately, and make sure that you have all personal information so that you can contact the person at any time.
