How to Improve the Care Your Loved Ones Receive
Many people feel guilt when they need to put a loved one in a nursing home, often because they worry whether or not they are going to get the best possible care there. While you can spend a lot of time researching and choosing the perfect nursing home, your job should not stop there. Many nursing homes are understaffed, and even if they have an appropriate number, there is no way to guarantee that they will see to everything. Here are some things that you can do to make sure that your loved one is getting the best possible care.
First, make sure that you involve yourself in the regular events of the nursing home. If you cannot make it in person, call regularly. Make sure you know who is in charge of each department and how to contact them in event of a problem. Know exactly what services your parents are supposed to be receiving, and follow up with them frequently to see that they are happening.
The more self-sufficient your parents are, the less you will need to do and the less self-sufficient, and the more closely you will need to monitor the situation. Even minor situations can turn into big problems if left unchecked.
Make sure that you know all of the staff and that they know you. The closer your relationship with them, the more you will see what kind of attitude they have about their job. Plus, being friendly and polite with them makes them more inclined to be friendly and polite with you and your loved one. Try to encourage your loved one to get along with them as well.
People like to be appreciated, so remember to take time to acknowledge the work that the staff is doing. A thank you card when they do something out of the ordinary, and a small gift for the holidays will always be appreciated.
Follow up to make sure that everything is done according to your contract. If there is an issue in a certain area, find out what can be done to make sure that it gets done properly. You may have to follow up repeatedly until you know that things are being taken care of.
Sometimes, simply volunteering in a nursing home can help the staff out. While there may be adequate people to take care of the medical needs, activities and social events may not be as well staffed. Consider teaching a craft class, helping to organize a religious service, or drawing letters for bingo night.
The more involved in your nursing home, the more you will know what life is really liked for your loved one. Plus, the more you invest time and effort in it, the more you can change things for the better. You may even be able to entice family members of other residents to assist in creating programs that will improve the quality of life for your loved ones. It will also give you the chance to spend time and bond with your loved for whatever time they have left.
