One Reason to Seek Out Nursing Home Care
There are many reasons to why you might need to put your loved on in a nursing home. One is for medical reasons. Here is a look at approaching nursing home care because of a medical necessity.
There are many medical reasons why you might need to send a loved one to a nursing home. Broken hips, heart attacks, and debilitating illnesses are one. These require hospitalization, and afterwards your loved one still needs some rehabilitation at a nursing home. The hospital may or may not provide you with a list of area nursing homes to start you off with.
In some areas, admission coordinators will visit local hospitals to talk to potential new residents. This person may take a look at your loved one's medical file to see if they would be a good match with the care that the nursing home provides. The nursing home has to make sure that they have the right staff available to care for your loved one's needs. They may also want to consider the type of insurance you are going to use to make sure that they accept it. They are a business, so they want to make sure that they will get all of the reimbursement so that can pay their operating costs.
Your challenge then becomes picking the nursing home that will suit your loved one best, and to do so in the allotted time given to you by the hospital. Remember, the main reason that the hospital wants you to transfer is because you have maxed out the reimbursement amount they can receive from your insurance. While they cannot force you out, it could get pricey if you end up needing to pay for more care out of pocket. However, this does mean that you can take the time to find a nursing home that suits your needs.
One possible solution is to talk with the hospital's discharge planner. He or she will know which nursing homes have the best reputation in your area, and possibly even which ones will have availability and be able to work with your insurance. Take time to visit each facility, making notes of the points that you liked and disliked. You can then follow up with the discharge planner so that they know you are working towards making the transfer happen. This may relieve some of the pressure put on you to get your loved one transferred as soon as possible. Remember, even if it is a medical necessity, this is not a decision that should be rushed.
In this case, a nursing home is dictated by medical necessity, which may make it easier for your loved one to make the transfer. Whether you are looking for something for a few days or a few months, you should keep the process the same. Use everything you know about nursing homes to ensure that the one that you are placing your loved one in is going to be able to offer optimal care. This can allow the recovery process to go quicker, and may even mean a return to their own home in a shorter length of time.
