When Care at Home is No Longer Possible
As people age, they often experience a regression in their dependency. Once independent people find that must rely more and more on friends and family to do even basic tasks. This change of affairs may cause them to become increasingly childlike, and they may experience anger at losing their independence. This may cause them to become irritable, sensitive, or confused when their surroundings or routines change.
For some seniors, this confusion continues to worsen as they age. It may make it difficult for them to remember important events like doctor's appointments or meals. It may prevent them from recognizing common household objects, making it difficult to bathe, cook, or perform everyday household chores. This can make it inappropriate or even dangerous for them to live alone or even be unattended. At this point, many families find it difficult to provide adequate care at home, and senior care housing may be an appropriate choice.
Many people still see senior care housing as "old folks' homes" that were nearly prisons for the elderly that were placed there. However, advances in the understanding of senior needs and conditions have allowed senior care homes to be more friendly and comfortable. They now can offer many facilities and options to allow seniors to maintain as much independence as possible.
For seniors that need constant care, there are senior care facilities that can provide 24 hour monitoring and assistance. This may include resident nurses and staff that can provide for all types of medical care. For seniors that are still capable of maintaining some of their independence, there are senior care facilities that offer independent living and community centers that provide social or recreational activities.
Senior care housing does not have to be used for all seniors. Some seniors can continue to live at home with the assistance from friends, families, churches, and neighbors. In some cases, having a home care nurse come in once a day or more can facilitate this process. However, if the senior needs more intensive care, senior care housing is often the best option.
In some cases, senior care housing can act as an interim solution. If a senior has been living at home, but plans to move in with a child or younger family member, there are often many arrangements that need to be made. While the family prepares to welcome their aging loved one properly, they can stay in senior care housing and receive the care that they need.
Making the decision to use a senior care facility is not always an easy one. Some families may consider it abandonment of the senior, or a sign of weakness that they have to rely on outside help. However, if work, family, or other aspects of their lives are starting to suffer as a result of trying to take proper care of an elderly family member, it may be time to reconsider their options. This decision should be decided by the entire family so that you can decide what the right options are for your given situation.
