Withdrawal can be a Risky Contraception Decision
One method of contraception is known as withdrawal. It means exactly what it sounds like. The man will pull out before he climaxes ensuring that when he ejaculates he does so outside of the vagina. The problem is that this can be a very risky method of contraception. A couple must decide before having intercourse that this is the method they choose to use. He must pull out before he ejaculates and far enough way that he is not laying too close to the woman's vagina or it is possible that some sperm may still get inside. This method requires an incredible amount of discipline on the part of the man. Statistics show that if the man can use this method properly and pulls out at the right time it actually has a ninety six percent success rate. Unfortunately, too many men are unable to have the self control to make this method work out well and because of that it results in unplanned pregnancies twenty seven percent of the time. Some women use a spermicide just to be sure.
There are advantages to this method if the man can be disciplined. For one thing it lessens the chance of spreading diseases because there is less exchange of body fluids. There are no costs to this type of protection and nothing to remember to bring or buy before having sexual relations. There are no embarrassing trips to the pharmacy or the free clinics. As well, there are no feared side effects from taking any type of birth control pills. A woman need not put anything foreign in her body to protect her from getting pregnant.
The biggest disadvantage to this method is the fact that it is a difficult thing for a man to pullout when he is in the middle of thrusting to bring himself to climax. The natural instinct is to keep going. As well, the man is trying to bring his partner to climax as well and if she is not getting there as fast as he is then the man will try to keep going until she does. This can mean he stays inside longer than he should and cannot then pullout in time. Another disadvantage to this method is the preoccupation of the couple with the act of withdrawal. The man may find he is concentrating so completely on that option that he is unable to enjoy the sex. The same thing is true of the woman as she worries about whether he will be able to pullout in time. Using a method that takes away from sexual pleasure may mean the couple is not using the right method of contraception.
It is common for there to be some sperm in the fluid that comes out of a man's penis before he ejaculates. It will not be much, but then it does not take much to wind up with an unplanned pregnancy. The method has many things to consider and a couple, especially the man, must be totally committed to it for it to actually work.
