Defining Death

Death for many is the ultimate sure thing. The one thing they can count on. At some point death will come. Death will come to all of us but in ways that are different. some may die with little or no control over the circumstances, others will be totally unaware of the act of death, and others will know in advance that they are dying and can have some control over the process. It is for those that are aware, that it is said that dying can be peaceful and done in a healthy way. The ideal way to die would be in a manner consistent with the lifestyle they enjoyed and in accordance with their wishes. The dying individual has the right to determine what if any procedures should be used to prolong life.

Death is typically declared when breathing has ceased and the heart has stopped beating.

Brain death is another death declaration that most countries have adopted during the 1980s. Basically, brain dead is when an individual has no brain activity, and the brain cannot function. Cardiorespiratory death follows brain death.

The individual who is near death will sleep more and grow weaker as death nears. Breathing becomes slower and there may be periods of apnea. At death the chest does not rise anymore, and there is no breath. The eyes may look glassy at death. You will not be able to feel a pulse.

Pre-active Phase of death:

The pre-active phase of death may last for a few weeks or months. The individual will withdraw from social activities and will spend more time alone. They will talk about tying up loose ends and will see to his/her will, trusts or other financial matters. Relationships will become important and any amends that need to be done will be done at this time.

The individual will spend less time eating, drinking and more time sleeping. The individual will be very interested in death and may ask to have a religious person present in order to set his/her spiritual life in order.

Active Phase of Dying:

The body may have difficulty swallowing liquids or foods.

There may be a change in personality or an inability to speak.

Physical movement will be slower and the hands and feet may feel cold to the touch.

The dying individual needs to know that it is ok to release from this life and to let go of earthly things. There should be a calm in the room and a peace for the one who is leaving. Death is natural. Death should arrive ideally when we are ready to let go. Individuals who are able to know that they are dying are able to have some control over the dying process. They can define death.
