5 Things You Must Know About Depression
1. What is depression?
is a state of mind in which the person feels very sad, anxious , hopeless , restless, lose of interest in activities and many more of these types of state of mind. It affects a persons thoughts, his feelings and behavioural aspects. They always appears to be moody and doesn't show interest in anything which they had found pleasurable earlier. It is a state of unhappiness, a feeling of loneliness, even a feeling of worthless. They change their attitude and change the way in which they look at themselves.
2. Symptoms of depression?
The main symptom of depression is mood disorders. People who were very happy and healthy will find some changes in their daily life and their behaviours. It includes
- Physical fatigue
- Feeling of hopelessness, worthlessness
- Sleep disorders- excessive sleeping or less sleep
- Change in appetite
- Weight gain or loss
- Thoughts of suicide
- Negative attitude
- Problems in concentration
- Unusual anger
- Feeling of isolation
When it is found that person is suffering from one or more of these problems, it may be the time that they need help. Help to get rid of these and bring them back to their life.
3. Causes of depression :
A clear reason of depression is not known, as the researchers say. They say that it is due to a combination of many factors which include biological, social and psychological. It be hereditary as well. Below are some of the reasons which can lead to depression :-
- Financial difficulties , loss of hope in settling back
- Relationship problems. It can be in married life, breaking up with a girlfriend or boy friend or divorce.
- Excess Alcohol or drug consumption
- Medications which include steroids
- Loss of job or Loss in examination
- Health problems for self or for somebody who is very close to them
4.Types of depression
The different types of depression are :-
a) Major depressive Disorder in which the affected person suffers from the symptoms for atleast 2 weeks. Normally this disorder is a recurring one, but rarely some will face this problem only once.
b) Atypical depression - this is a temporary mood change. These people changes their mood when they hear a good news or when they spend time with so mebody whom they are very close to. But their mood again changes with the change in environment.
c) Dysthymia - This is a chronic , but a mild depression. It lasts for a long time, and sometimes the person will get used to his low mood and starts thinking that that's his normal mood or behaviours.
d) Seasonal affective disorders - Change in mood according to change in weather.
5.How to help ?
is curable. When you realise that you are in this situation, or any of your friends is in this stage, help yourself or help them to come out of this mood. It might require a social and mental support , a change in lifestyle, professional help and medication ofcourse. Take the help of your close friends or family, their support can do wonders. Start doing exercises, get good sleep , eat healthy food, and practise relaxation techniques. Take the help of a professional. Their advise and counselling can help you to bring changes in yourself.
Apart from this proper medication should be taken based on the assessment by the doctor.
