What Kind of Sugar to You Eat?
Most of us that know a little bit about healthy eating understand that sugar is not necessarily a good thing. Perhaps some of us came from a lifestyle in which we binged on sugary snacks, cakes and pies on a regular basis. More than likely, our health and our weight suffered as a result. To be certain, refined sugar is absolutely bad for you. That doesn't mean, however, that all types of sugar are equally as bad.
There is sugar that occurs naturally in all types of food. As a matter of fact, all carbohydrates contain sugar and that is what helps to keep our body running and energized. Not all sugars are created equal, however, even when they are contained in fruits and vegetables. You would probably be surprised to realize that some of the sugars will burn up in your body faster than others. This can both help you and hurt you, depending on how you use it.
If you eat sugars that enter into your bloodstream quickly, you will be hurting your body in many ways. First of all, your pancreas will release insulin in mass quantities in order to attack and assimilate the sugar. It will be unsuccessful for the most part in assimilating it all and you will be left feeling lethargic. Not only that, whatever is left will be assimilated into your body in the form of fat. The opposite is also true. If you eat sugars that are absorbed slowly then your pancreas will only release the amount of insulin that is necessary. You will feel energized and full in between your meals.
The main key is understanding exactly which carbohydrates you should be eating. The way that you do this is through something that is known as the glycemic index. This is an index which tells you exactly how quickly the sugars are released into your system by these various carbohydrates. They are rated on a scale of one to 100. If you eat carbohydrates that are listed as 50 or below on the glycemic index you would be surprised at how well your body will respond. You will have more energy during the day and you will sleep better at night. You will also lose weight naturally and tend to keep it off. Those are benefits which anyone who wants to live a healthy lifestyle can not ignore.
