Well-Toned Blood Vessels Decrease Risk of Heart Disease
There are weight lifting, walking and other physical activities to sculpt the outside of your body, but what about the inside? Your blood vessels could likely use some toning to prevent narrowing of the arteries and other ailments that could cause heart disease. So what exactly is the big deal about strong, toned blood vessels?
Well, the better the shape of those blood vessels that make up your circulatory system, the better your health. Part of the problem with heart disease is the shape of the blood vessels like the arteries. When they narrow and accumulate plaque build-up, your heart has to work a lot harder to push the blood out through the body. The better in shape your arteries and other blood vessels are, the less effort your heart has to expend which means lower risk of heart disease.
Exercise primarily takes care of the outside of your body but what you put in your mouth will definitely affect your blood vessels and their overall health. Taking vitamin and mineral supplements to make up for deficiencies in your diet is a smart move as is drinking more water, eating plenty of healthy foods and ensuring you are taking in enough antioxidants. All of these things are important for toning up your blood vessels.
What to aim for in toning your blood vessels
The most important part of your blood vessels is the endothelium. This light coating of cells lines the inside of your blood vessels and has several responsibilities. First of all, the endothelium plays a role in the clotting of blood. It also has a part in regulating blood pressure and even the flow of blood. What happens is this thin layer of cells secretes different chemicals which act as the director in expanding and contracting the blood vessels. This action spurs the blood pressure, clotting and blood flow.
Elasticity and suppleness are two traits necessary in order to accommodate a number of stress factors the blood vessels may encounter. Physical activity in particular can cause changes in blood flow and such so healthy, toned blood vessels are important. When there is some type of dysfunction, your blood vessels can stiffen up which reduces the circulation of the blood causing your heart to pump a lot harder.
Heart disease can be caused by problems or dysfunction of the endothelium. Unfortunately, it can be quite heard to quantify the damage if it indeed is the endothelium. Therefore, studying your diet and lifestyle is the best indicator of overall health of your blood vessels.
A heart healthy diet is the key to maintaining well-toned blood vessels. You know the routine - get plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat dairy, lean meats and fish in your diet. Avoid smoking and alcohol and exercise in moderation. In addition, there are vitamins and supplements you can take to boost your blood vessel health. Here is a small sampling of what you should consider taking:
* Vitamin E benefits people of all ages and greatly helps in keeping the blood vessels supple, yet firm and strong.
* Antioxidants are found in a number of things such as garlic, onion and other foods and these antioxidants greatly reduce heart disease risk.
* Vitamin C, alpha lipoic acid, flavonoids and L-arginine are other substances found that work to provide the best toning experience to blood vessels.
It is important that you take care of your blood vessel health because it could be a deciding factor as to whether you might develop heart disease. Avoid fried foods and be sure to take your vitamins and minerals every day.
