Male Menopause Glossary
When we talk about male menopause, it's good to have a reference glossary of medical words to help us to define the phrases and terms the medical community uses.
A.D.A.M. this stands for Androgen Deficiency of the Aging Male; this is another medical term for male menopause
ANDRO this means man, male, or masculine
ANDROPAUSE another term for male menopause
CARDIOVASCULAR a medical term specifically pertaining to the heart, the blood vessels, and the system that moves blood through the body
DEPRESSION a medical description of a person in a state of emotional (and sometimes physical) malaise
DYSFUNCTION this refers to any abnormality or impairment of a specific function; doesn't work
ERECTILE this is pertaining to erection
EXACERBATE this means to make worse, to worsen
F.A.T. this stands for Free Active Testosterone; this is the correct medical test to assess testosterone level in blood
FATIGUE exhaustion of strength; weariness from exertion
FIFTEEN MILLIGRAMS this is the amount of testosterone a healthy man will manufacture in the course of 24 hours
FIVE PERCENT this is the approximate percentage of men that are going through andropause and are being medically treated for it
FLUSH this is a sudden reddening, as of the face or the neck
HOT FLASH this refers to a sensation of uncomfortable heat that develops seemingly spontaneously
H.R.T. this is a medical abbreviation that stands for Hormone Replacement Therapy
HYPOGONADISM this pertains to diminished internal secretion of testes or ovaries
IRRITABLE MAN SYNDROME this is a term that describes many of the symptoms that may lead to a diagnosis of male menopause
LIBIDO this refers to sexual desire
MALE CLIMACTERIC (from the Greek word klimacter=the rung of a ladder) this is another word for male menopause
MANOPAUSE this is a slang term for male menopause or andropause
MENOPAUSE this refers to the physiologic cessation of menstruation, usually occurring between the forty-fifth and fifty-fifth years
MID LIFE this refers to middle age
MID LIFE CRISIS this is another term for andropause
MOOD SWINGS refers to a person moving abruptly from one state of mind to another
ONE PERCENT this refers to the average amount that testosterone is estimated to drop per year following approximately the thirtieth birthday in a male
P.S.A. this stands for Prostate-Specific Antigen; this is a blood test; it is the most common method of diagnosing prostate problems
SEXUALITY this refers to the sum of a person's sexual attributes; also, the quality of being sexual
S.H.B.G. this stands for Sex Hormone Binding Globulin; this is low in men with menopausal symptoms
TESTES this is the plural of testis, a pair of male reproductive glands, and the body's source of sperm
TESTOSTERONE this is the hormone that creates and releases sperm, initiating sex drive, building muscle tissue, maintaining memory, and building bone mass
TESTOSTERONE REPLACEMENT THERARPY this is the primary medical treatment for Andropause, returning the hormonal status to a healthy level
TWENTY-FIVE MILLION this is the estimated number of men who are between forty and fifty-five years of age and are undergoing male menopause
VASODILATION this refers to the dilatation of the blood vessels (see "flushing")
