Study Shows Yoga Helps Lower Back Pain
Yoga has long been touted as an effective means to increase oneĆs flexibility. It has been assumed that increased flexibility actually helps one avoid various bodily injuries, but no study to date has really established this in anything other than a vague manner.
Well, that has now changed. A study by the Group Health Research Institute reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine has established that yoga can decrease lower back pain to the point that pain medications can be reduced or eliminated outright.
The study looked at a group of people who went to yoga classes for six weeks compared to a control group given self care books. The people attending the yoga classes showed clear improvement in their lower back pain. Perhaps most encouraging, they continued to show these improvements six months after attending the classes, and were able to reduce an even eliminate pain medications.
Researches concluded that the yoga sessions were beneficial both because of the stretching aspect and the strengthening of muscles that occurred in the lower back and supporting muscles.
