Important Things to Look for in a Daily Vitamin Supplement

You know that you need to enhance your diet with vitamins and mineral supplements but what do you choose? Walking down the aisle of the pharmacy with the dizzying array of these supplements is almost enough to make a grown-up cry. There are way too many choices! Specially formulated ones for men and women crowd the shelves along with those that tout they are for an adult with an active lifestyle while others may proclaim they have advanced formulas.

The most important thing to remember is to choose a supplement that suits your individual needs. Your spouse's vitamin supplement is not going to address your individual body concerns. For instance, if you are experiencing menopause or want to increase your fertility, you would need something totally different from a man who takes a supplement in an active formula. Look to a formula that addresses not only your gender but also your age and even health condition when possible. People in their 30's would have totally different requirements than someone in their 60's because health concerns are worlds apart.

Don't Go for the Highest Strength

When you get to much or one or more vitamins, this can actually do you more harm than good. Birth defects have been known to happen when a woman gets too much vitamin A while high levels of iron can increase the risk of heart attack. Sometimes, you may need guidance from your doctor so as to choose the right multi-vitamin and mineral supplement that is right for you. Many times your final selection will be based on a medical condition you might have.

Vitamin E, often called nature's youthful vitamin, is wonderful in small doses as it has antioxidant properties. These properties help fight free radicals in the body which can come from pollution and even dyes and preservatives in food. It also helps build healthy muscle and keep joints limber. Too much vitamin E can have a detrimental effect on any medical condition you may have and even cause toxicity in the blood.

While iron is important for women who are trying to get pregnant or just at child-bearing age, those who are in the midst of menopause need about half the dosage. Too much iron can cause constipation in men and women. Men also have increase risk of heart attacks as well. As you can see, age and gender cause disparate needs.

Multi-Vitamin and Mineral Supplements are Important

It is almost impossible to get all the vitamins and minerals you need through your diet. Even if you are most diligent with your nutrition, you would have to eat quite a bit each day to cover all your vitamin and mineral basis. For this reason, there are many formulas of vitamin and mineral supplements.

Remember, choose based on your individual needs. If you hate dairy products or cannot tolerate them, you will want a supplement with extra calcium and vitamin D. If your doctor tells you that you may be anemic, a supplement with extra iron may be necessary. It is important to note that you do not choose a multi-vitamin which has 100% of your daily allowance of anything. This is because you do derive some of these things through foods and too much of a good thing vitamin and mineral-wise can cause toxicity. Always err on the side of caution and your life will be a lot healthier.
