Are You A Good Candidate For Cranial Osteopathy?

Americans are gradually becoming disenchanted with the medical status quo. The rising cost of healthcare, the frequent scandals involving pharmaceuticals, and of course the hope to find a better way of treating an ailment without the need for medicines all drive the healthcare consumer to seek out alternative treatments. This explains the increase in patients who visit the offices of acupuncturists and also chiropractors in a search for a holistic approach to bodily wellness.

The bridge between alternative medicine and the tried and true medical establishment and its status quo is currently provided by doctors specializing in osteopathic medicine. These are degreed, licensed, and credentialed medical professionals who have a D.O. abbreviation as opposed to a M.D. designation behind their names. Doctors of osteopathy have been making recent headlines because of a service known as cranial osteopathy they have provided with some stunning results.

Cranial osteopathy refers to the manual manipulation of the musculoskeletal system in the head and neck area. Practitioners find that the manipulation results in a stimulation of brain activity, which in turn eases pain and serves to speed up the body's ability to heal itself. Due to the alteration of the bodily area, it is understood that the spinal fluid undergoes a certain rhythmic movement which then leads to significant and measurable changes along the spinal column.

Due to the dangers associated with cranial osteopathy it is highly recommended that only skilled practitioners attempt this manipulation of the musculoskeletal system. A mistake made while working with the spine, neck, and of course also the spinal fluid can have very far reaching, and in some cases permanent, effects. Patients who previously experienced a fracture of the spinal column must be certain to their osteopathic practitioner ahead of time when and where the break occurred and also describe the circumstances surrounding it.

Conservative D.O.s generally shy away from treating any patient whose break was relatively recent or who presents with a spinal column that shows an improperly healed break. It is a good idea to discuss in detail the consequences of cranial osteopathy with the practitioner prior to undertaking the first session. Additionally, it is crucial to answer all of the medical history questions in immaculate detail. Another reason why you may not be considered a very good candidate for this practice could stem from your very own expectations.

If you are still in the mindset of patients who visit an M.D. and expect for the healing to be virtually instantaneous because of a pill or shot the physician administers, the odds are good that you will not have what it takes to undergo a series of cranial osteopathy treatments. Most successful cranial osteopathy manipulations have to be done over a period of time, sometimes as long as having two to four weeks in between treatments. Although healing is said to be affected quickly, the wait is too much for some patients and they end of visiting an M.D. concurrently with their D.O. to speed up relief of pain.
