Osteopathy Demands Sleepers Use a Firm Mattress
Even as most sleepers prefer the use of a soft feather mattress, the average osteopathic practitioner warns patients against such notions and instead insists that they use a firm mattress. Other physicians have also entered the fray of discussion and they, too, recommend that sleepers opt for the firm mattress and leave the soft and one at the store. This is especially true for the patient suffering with back pain and related problems.
It is common knowledge that although initially hard to do, sleeping on a hard surface has the potential of relieving back pain and in some cases may actually protect the patient against having to deal with it at all. Of course, firmness is still a matter of discussion and while some patients have taken this advice to mean a rock hard mattress that had about as much give as a wooden board, others have asked for more information and learned that what mattress makers sell as "medium firm" is actually the optimum firmness suggested by osteopathic practitioners and other physicians.
There are also other ways osteopathy can be employed when picking and maintaining that perfect mattress:
* Test it in the store by laying down on your back, on the left side, and also on the right side. Remain in each position for a couple of minutes and then sit up. You may be surprised to notice that a mattress which seems perfect in one position actually might cause some strain on your back in another one. Employees at mattress stores are accustomed to having consumers test rest their wares and you should not feel self conscious about taking your time when picking and choosing the right kind of mattress.
* Once you are using the mattress, it is a good idea to turn it over and rotate it periodically. The goal of course is the avoidance of lumps and the strain on some of the interior workings. The heavier you are, the more often such a flip and rotation should be done, since you are putting more wear and tear on your mattress at night.
* Discuss ways with your osteopathic specialist that you might be able to lessen the impact on the lumbar region. Usually the suggestion is to sleep on your back, but depending on the severity of pain you are currently suffering and the amount of damage done to your spine, this might not be the best idea. It is a good idea to mention your concerns to your health care professional and find out if there are some sleeping aids, such a body pillows or memory foam, you might need to employ for a period of time.
Remember that a mattress is not the final purchase you will make when it comes to purchasing the kind of bedding your osteopathic healthcare provider suggests. Pillows also play a big role in the quality of your sleep, and once again it is a good idea to consult with your physician about this topic and then follow their recommendations.
