Picking the Right School for Your Osteopathy Training
Becoming a doctor of osteopathy (D.O.) is a long road and requires a serious commitment of time and resources. As such it is understandable that candidates who are ready to undergo this journey want to know ahead of time that they are applying to the right school. While there is ultimately no guarantee that the school you are choosing for your osteopathy training will translate into patient trust and actual ability, you can better your odds simply by the venue you choose.
Picking the right school for your osteopathy training does not have to be a complicated undertaking, but there are several issues you must keep in mind. For example, did you know that staying local, whenever possible, has distinct advantages to seeking out a school that is halfway across the country? Unless you are planning to permanently relocate, the osteopathy school you choose will have several relationships with local area hospitals. These allows for the scheduling of rotations, getting your name and face known, and might make employment at the hospital or even an external relationship with the hospitals a lot easier to accomplish later on.
Expenses you are expected to foot range by schools. Some are downright cheap when compared to others, and comparison shopping the curriculum, hospital affiliations and also cost can save you a lot of money that later on will set you up for getting out of debt a lock quicker. Another good idea before deciding on a school for osteopathy is a visit to the campus, and some easy conversation with current students in the cafeteria. If you find that students look harassed, overly tired or busy, or if the cafeteria is closed, the library has inconvenient hours, and the computer lab looks run down, then you might have found the kind of school to avoid. Even if the instruction is stellar, the lack of atmosphere will make learning and studying a drag.
Research accreditation carefully; some schools have a variety of accreditations by a number of governing bodies, but unless these accreditations are bestowed by the official agencies the department of education has approved, all other accrediting bodies are pretty much worthless. Do not waste your money on an osteopathic program that might have a great reputation but lacks the acknowledgment in professional circles. Although attendance there might bolster your resume, it does little to make your more marketable.
In addition, remember that there is strength in numbers. Although you might like the idea of being one of a few D.O.s in the area you thinking of opening your practice, remember that being in a minority may actually interfere with your ability to earn a livelihood. Patients may seek the lack of doctors of osteopathy as a grounds for avoiding you instead of flocking to you and before you gamble on being one of the few, consider that practicing in a city with many D.O.s may mean more competition, but it also has the potential of portraying osteopathy as a mainstream medical approach, thus making more patients willing to visit your practice.
