Questions To Ask When Buying Medical Insurance That Covers Osteopathy and Other Alternative Healthcare
The face of buying insurance has changed considerably in the last decade. Whereas before you were willing to take whatever you could get, as long as it was cheap, at this juncture most consumers have decided that buyers can indeed be choosers and the choice of the hour is alternative health care. This includes osteopathy, chiropractic care, massages therapy, and also in some cases the care of hypnotherapists. It is noteworthy that even as there is a big push by consumers to cover such services, some companies are woefully slow in responding to the insurance buyer. To this end, it is useful to know which questions to ask when buying medical insurance.
1. Find out how the transition from your current health plan to the new health plan will work. You obviously do not want to cancel your policy until you are certain you are covered, but some plans stipulate a waiting period, especially when it comes to holistic care. This is done to protect the insurance provider in an effort to minimize the payouts for visits that may sometimes compound - osteopathic care in itself usually requires multiple visits over a span of months to ascertain whether or not healing is affected with the musculoskeletal manipulations the doctor of osteopathy (D.O.) performs -- but will leave you in a bind if you must wait for six months for taking up treatment.
2. Ask about the companies the insurance broker represents. The more the better, since this allows you to shop around different providers and policies without having to contact a variety of different agents, some of whom you might have a hard time working with. On the other hand, it is always a good idea to work with two to four brokers, just to ensure that they are completely up to date on the product they are selling. This prevents you from suffering from the mistake of a broker who might not know about a new deal or cheaper policy that another broker is quite familiar with.
3. Ask about specific exclusions. Some policies will promise coverage of alternative health care but in reality the care offered is limited to only osteopathic care which is federally mandated. Although this is great news for those who are seeking specifically to receive care from a D.O., the chance of visiting other alternative healthcare providers the osteopath may suggest to further your treatment are no longer fiscally viable, unless you are willing to pay out of pocket for these visits. Asking for details is always a good idea.
4. Request to see a list of approved providers. While an insurance company may promise to cover osteopathy and other alternative health measures, it is wise to peruse the actual list of providers. You may be dismayed to find that there are only a very small group of actual service providers and they may not even be local to you!
It is heartening to learn that insurance providers are listening to consumer demands, but the buyer must still beware and ask a lot of questions before signing on the dotted line.
