5 Things You Must Know About Pain

1. , in as much as it causes discomfort and unpleasantness, is very helpful in diagnosing an underlying problem that one may have in the body. What makes one realize that all is not in order after a fall, a bruise or a cut is the pain one feels. This prompts one to either seek professional medical help or take some pain killers. The frequency or intensity of pain is also a pointer to the magnitude or seriousness of the underlying problem. It is necessary that we don't ignore any pain on any part of the body, no matter how dull or subtle it may be as it could be our indicator to solving a major disease in the body.

2. Something you also must know about pain is that it may be acute or chronic. With acute pain, there is an impulse to immediately withdraw from the causative agent. This could be fire or mild electric shock for instance. This helps you avoid much more damage that would otherwise be imminent in the absence of the pain. If for instance you accidentally get a burn from touching a hot pan, your sudden reflex is to let go of the pan. The pain your finger feels also helps you register that you need to rest that particular part of the body to allow it to completely heal.

3. Chronic pain is a recurrent pain that refuses to go away completely unlike an acute pain. It could be general somatic pain(pain from the outer body), visceral pain(pain from the internal organs), bone pain or muscle spasms/cramps. Constant headaches and circulatory problems also fall under this category. The bottom line with these types of pain is that they should never be ignored and professional medical help should be sought.

4. When going through pain, it is important understand that it is natural, first of all. And that pain can be physiological, psychological or both. can cause one to be depressed, anxious or even suicidal. That one is going through this intense discomfort and that no one else can completely feel it can result in feelings of self-pity and may even heighten the psychological aspect of the pain. In addition, the medication one gets may trigger undesirable side effects, for example gastro-intestinal upsets, drowsiness and fatigue. These can further irritate a patient and even cause one to develop tolerance to some drugs that are usually prescribed.

5. can be controlled and treated in several ways. The physical aspect of it needs enough psychotherapy counseling. Often, anxiety, depression, anger, insomnia, irritability and fear of further injuring oneself may hinder proper physical therapy. Thus, information and support is useful for patients of pain. Acupuncture and hypnosis are also used in treating pain, although hypnosis has been seen to be more of a behavioral therapy as opposed to a relaxation therapy. Paracetamol or a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug like ibuprofen are useful in treating mild pain. Antidepressants and antiepileptic drugs are also very useful with chronic pain. Procedures like pulsed radio frequency, neuromodulation, and the administration of an intrathecal pump to deliver very small quantities of medications directly into the spinal fluid are also used.
