Ease into Age Gracefully with Exercise
You are never too old to improve your health. Just remember that! The benefits of exercise have long been touted to many age groups as a way to feel more energetic and youthful. However, what you don't see on those hard body commercials for fitness clubs or gyms are older adults exercising. That is just plain wrong. The senior group is perhaps the one demographic area that needs exercise the most!
People of all shapes, sizes and ages can benefit from exercise. From the overweight diabetic to the senior with the heart condition, it is never too late to start exercising and enjoying the health benefits you will realize from it. One important reason why you should exercise regularly and stay active physically is that you can slow the progression of a disease or even prevent it all together. Even older adults who already have been diagnosed with an illness of disease can benefit and will see positive changes in their health as a result of exercise.
Cast away your fears of exercise
If you are an older adult and have not really indulged in many physical pursuits, you may be hesitant to start an exercise regiment. In fact, many seniors have this fear that exercise will cause them more harm than good and could actually make them feel worse. However, nothing could be farther from the truth.
Exercise is perfectly safe for people in all age ranges from toddlers to seniors. The key is the type of exercise you choose to participate in. If you are a rather sedentary older adult, don't expect to run a mile or walk the treadmill for an hour. It takes time to build you stamina and therefore you should start off small and work your way up. Older adults end up doing more harm than good for their health if they do not exercise at all.
By not exercising, seniors lose ground in staying autonomous and healthy. When you do not exercise, you lose ground in endurance, strength, balance and elasticity in your body. Without these qualities, you will have a tougher time adapting to new places and situations.
Start now on your exercise game plan
Even the most sedentary of older adults can enjoy some benefits of better health with exercise. You will want to choose exercises and other physical activities that will work on the very things listed in above paragraphs you need to keep your independence. By becoming more active, you are essentially increasing your ability to live and travel alone as well as take care of yourself.
Of course, you will want to consult with your doctor as to the best exercises you can start in your new fitness regiment. Swimming, yoga, Pilates, walking, strength and weight training and dancing are all great physical activities for older adults. Based on your current health and abilities, a doctor and even a personal trainer can help you create a realistic game plan and fitness goals. The result will be more energy and healthier outlook on life.
