5 Things You Must Know About Tendonitis
1. is defined by swelling of Tendons
The inflammation of tendons brings rise to a condition known as tendonitis. The chief function of tendons is to connect the muscles to the bones. These tissues are also quite flexible and fibrous. Whenever a muscle stretches, it exerts some force on to the muscle through the tendons which then pulls on the bone. This then causes the movement of the joints. The main cause of tendonitis is overuse. This usually occurs whenever an individual goes through an exercise regime too fast. For this reason the tendons do not get enough time to prepare themselves accordingly which then results to swollen tendons.
2. Aging causes poor elasticity of Tendons
The older a person grows, the less flexible the tendons become. They also lose their ability to move smoothly. For this reason the chances of developing tendonitis becomes higher with age. Medical experts are certain that all these changes linked to aging may come about as a result of changes in the blood supply to the damaged tissue which is followed by nutrient reduction within the healing tendons.
3. Surgery is the last resort in the treatment of
Traditional treatment methods are the best option when it comes to the treatment of tendonitis. One of the most important factors which has to be looked into when dealing with the conventional treatment methods is plenty of rest. This will help a great deal in the prevention of aggravating the swollen area. The use of a brace is quite recommendable for protecting the affected area and also to have you bear in mind the need to resist the tendon as you go about your daily activities. The use of ice and other common anti-inflammatory medications also come in quite handy since they help to significantly reduce on the swelling and tenderness. In the event that the mentioned traditional methods do nothing for the symptoms involved then you also have the option of using a cortisone injection. Cortisone is a highly effective anti- inflammatory which doctors inject on to the inflammed area. However, this should be done sparingly since multiple injection may cause the tendon to rupture.
4. Surgical intervention may be required for severe cases
surgery is normally considered as the final resort and is mainly used for patients who are experiencing excruciating pain or restricted mobility. Use of surgery can also be used when dealing with tendon tears, ruptures as well as bone spurs. A bone spur often rubs itself against the tendon thereby causing inflammation and possible tendon tear. In this case, the surgeon will be required to repair the tissue in case of any damage. High chances are that this area may become immobilized, but can still regain full mobility through rehabilitation
5.Two key types of surgery
These include arthroscopic and open surgery. Arthroscopic surgery is less invasive and works through the repairing of the tendons with the use of tiny incisions. On the other hand, open surgery is highly invasive and is mainly used when dealing with totally torn tendons.
